Grid-type.com is an experimental type tool. You can generate different types of grids with it, draw your letters within these grids, and download them as a font file.
The tool can be used to experiment with experimental headline or logo typefaces to explore new shapes and patterns. With this project, I wanted to incorporate code into the type design process, allowing for almost endless variations with different parameters and serendipitous encounters.
On grid-type.com, you can play around with creating your own stencils just by picking a grid and tweaking things like rows, columns, or how complex you want it to be.
There are nine different grid types to explore, each reflecting my research into grid construction.
Some of them lean on pure geometry—rectangles, triangles, circles—while others borrow inspiration from display technologies like pixels or segments that have shaped type design over time.
You’ll even find nods to historic approaches, like Wim Crouwel’s work, Bauhaus principles, and the Plaque Découpée Universelle.
The tool is perfect if you want to experiment with bold headlines, logo typefaces, or explore fresh shapes and patterns.
The fun part for me was weaving code into the type design process, which means you’re not just stuck with static grids—you get endless variations depending on the parameters you set.
Sometimes you’ll land on something you expected, other times you’ll stumble into surprising, almost accidental designs. And that’s precisely the point.
