In a high-complexity project, I start by sketching whiteboard ideas for flows, asking tons of questions about functionality, and trying to soak up as much as I can.

Subject matter: As I can, a lot of times this results in documenting things in a spreadsheet, and this is more of a strategy/ux thinking that doesn’t really apply directly and practically to the visual interface.
