Apple introduced several AI-powered photo-editing features at WWDC 2026, making it easier for users to enhance and transform their images directly in the Photos app.
One of the standout additions is Spatial Reframing, which uses Apple Intelligence to create the impression that a photo was taken from a different angle. Simply drag the image to explore new perspectives, and AI fills in the missing areas to make the result look natural. Despite the name, this feature works with both regular photos and spatial images.
Apple is also adding a new Extend tool that can expand photos beyond their original borders. Similar to generative fill tools found in other editing apps, it uses AI to create new content around the edges of an image.
The existing Clean Up feature is getting smarter too. Users can remove unwanted objects from photos, and the updated version produces more realistic results with improved background reconstruction.
Meanwhile, Image Playground, Apple’s AI image creation app, is receiving a significant upgrade. The tool can now generate more realistic, photo-like images instead of the cartoon-style visuals seen in earlier versions. Users can create images featuring multiple people from their photo library, edit specific areas by circling them, and describe changes with simple, natural-language prompts.
Apple is also introducing more output options, allowing users to generate images in portrait, landscape, square, and wallpaper formats.
Together, these updates show Apple’s continued push to bring practical AI-powered creativity and editing tools directly into everyday apps, making advanced photo editing more accessible to everyone.
